SCIENTIFIC OUTPUTS DISSEMINATION
Temulawak (Curcuma xanthorrhiza Roxb) is known as one of the
Indonesian indigenous herbals, which mostly used as traditional
medicine. The popularity of Temulawak is increasing along with
its commercial use and research results application. For the last
40 years, many scientists have conducted research to reveal the
secret of Temulawak.
In fact, it is not only for stiff muscle
treatment, but Temulawak is also used for curing ‘liver disease’
(jaundice). Recently, Temulawak has been used in supplement
beverages to increase appetite (as natural appetizer), and to keep
fresh our stamina.
Temulawak was also reported to prevent
avian flu which currently becomes a serious problem in the
world.
Temulawak has yellow root, with essential oil such as campher,
artumeron,
cycloisoprenmirsen,
xanthorizol,
zingiberon,
turmeron, tetrahydro-p methyltoluol, and carbinol. Meanwhile,
the active components of temulawak are curcumin, p-tolil-
methylcarbonyl, and 1-turmeron.
Nowadays, in the middle of modern lifestyle, temulawak is still
occupying place in our society’s heart.
The efficacy of curing
materials to improve our health and its active components such
as for anti-inflammation, anti-microbes, cholesterol reducing, and
anticancer, deserved that temulawak is appropriate to be
Indonesian Ginseng Herbal.
Biopharmaca Research Center, Bogor Agricultural University
(BRC-IPB) has observed various benefits of Temulawak and
believed that those advantages can be enhanced to improve
people health.
Various kinds of research results as well as
commercial product have been developed by Temulawak’s
stakeholders in Indonesia and even worldwide. To modernize
technology, research strategy and product development as well as
its market potency among stakeholders (e.g. government,
researcher, academician, businessmen, and farmer), BRC-IPB in
collaboration with Indonesian government institutions, private
sectors and foreign partner is going to hold an “International
Symposium on Temulawak (Curcuma xanthorriza Roxb)” in May
2008. This event will be held in Bogor, a beautiful rainy city, with
Bogor Botanical Garden at the heart of the city. Bogor located
about 40 km away south from Jakarta, Indonesia.
Cultivation and post harvest technology, bioactivity (efficacy,
safety), market potential, health and welfare, utilization, etc.of
Curcuma xanthorrhiza and other-related zingiberaceae.
To promote the utilization and research development of
Temulawak as Indonesian medicinal herbal toward healthy life of
global society
